Oh crumbs!! What’s this Cookie Law thing all about?!
Thanks to a new EU Law and the ICO, all websites must now give users the ability to say "No" to Cookies being placed on their computers.
So you might have heard rumours and gossip in recent months about the so-called "EU Cookie Law" and how UK businesses face a possible £500k fine for not complying!!
1) But what does it all mean?
You might have noticed that on a lot of websites recently, a new popup/banner has been getting in the way, asking you if you're happy for it to use Cookies (or just telling you to use another site if you don't like that!).
Cookies are basically small files (text based) which websites can place on your computer, to:
a) store information about how you are using the site (analytics).
b) display ads appropriate to you.
c) keep track of your choices (shopping basket).
d) connect you with other sites (Facebook Like Buttons, etc).
The law states that UK and European websites much tell users that they use Cookies (how, what, when and why) and give them the options to switch them off.
2) How does it affect you?
Well, the bottom line is that we need to get a Cookie Policy and some code onto your website, to:
a) cover you legally, in case their are any issues/complaints.
b) allow people to switch the Cookies on/off as they wish.
